Northern Lights above Upper Harbor Ore Dock... at about 2:30 a.m. | |

Really... It is times like this that it is easy for me to remember why I packed my bags years ago and moved 18 hours away from home. Ok, you're right...the awesome beauty of Michigan's UP came AFTER I moved 18 hours from home for a boy (my now husband), but what a wonderful bonus it is.
I am so unbelievably giddy about the fact that within less than a week I am now able to mark off two very important things on my "I'm totally a Yooper now" list - See a Moose in the wild and witness the Northern Lights.
(Time to put my Summa Cum Laude status to use and sound smart) Tonight's show, a category G1 geomagnetic storm (a lower level of activity), was a result of the effects of a coronal mass ejection that was observed earlier in the week. Since that time, the lights have been predicted to be visible tonight (and I have heard the next couple of nights). NO, I didn't know all of that or what it meant until I read it, let's be reasonable, but regardless...I knew all week I would force the hubster to join me on a Northern Lights hunt. Extra frosting on the cake, being joined by even more good company, Tara and Tori.
When we arrived to the beach near Little Presque, there was a green-tinted haze above the island that was obviously not normal sky, we were hopeful. After being there a while, the sky literally exploded. I have never seen anything like it. Light green fire in the sky... it danced...constantly in motion and changing. Fireworks have NOTHING on the lights, and from what I understand this light show was nothing compared to what the Northern Lights can be. It is the type of thing that makes you feel truly small in such a large and undiscovered universe.
So, despite the "homesickness" for the South, the food, the heat, the people...that still creeps up from time to time - I am so truly honored to call this place home. I adore living in a place where I can spend a Friday night with people I love, on a beach, next to a fire, engulfed by the sounds of Lake Superior, witnessing something amazing and rare. Ahhhhhh Pure Michigan :)

This is cheesy, but this reminded all of us of the "Death Eaters" from Harry Potter - see it? The hand... |

This was when the sky really exploded and danced |

Good company enjoying the show |

I officially dub Tara the Smore QUEEN. Best smore, period. Giant Marshmallows are key |
